In Widelands, you are the regent of a small clan. You start out with nothing but your headquarters, where all your resources are stored.

The Widelands Development Team is proud to announce the immediate availability of Widelands Build 21. Widelands is a free, cross-platform economy strategy game in which players control the fate of a small tribe that can grow into a big empire, in a style of play that is unique in the open source world. Widelands is packaged in all major Linux distributions. In case your distribution does not provide pre-compiled packages for Ubuntu and openSUSE we have special repositories in place (see next section). Another option is to compile Widelands yourself. Go to the BuildingWidelands page for further instructions. Widelands is a free, open source real-time strategy game with singleplayer campaigns and a multiplayer mode. The game was inspired by Settlers II™ (© Bluebyte) but has significantly more variety and depth to it. Still, it is easy to get started through playable tutorials.
Widelands is a game that’s all about player freedom. You are free to develop your civilization however you see fit. You are free to come up with your own unique strategy.
In the course of the game, you will build an ever growing settlement. Every member of your clan will do his or her part to produce more resources - wood, food, iron, gold and more - to further this growth. The economic network is complex and different in the four tribes (Barbarians, Empire, Atlanteans, and Frisians).
As you are not alone in the world, you will meet other clans sooner or later. Some of them may be friendly and you may eventually trade with them. However, if you want to rule the world, you will have to train soldiers and fight.
Widelands offers a unique style of play. For example, a system of roads plays a central role in your economy: all the goods that are harvested and processed by the tribe must be transported from one building to the next. This is done by carriers, and those carriers always walk along the roads. It is your job to lay out the roads as efficiently as possible.
Another refreshing aspect of the game is the way you command your clan. There is no need to tell every single one of your subjects what to do - that would be impossible, because there can be thousands of them! Instead, all you need to do is order them to build a building somewhere, and the builders will come. Similarly, whenever you want to attack an enemy, just place an order to attack one of their barracks, and your soldiers will march to fight. You're really a ruler: You delegate in times of war and in times of peace!
Widelands offers single-player mode with different campaigns; the campaigns all tell stories of tribes and their struggle in the Widelands universe! However, settling really starts when you unite with friends over the Internet or LAN to build up new empires together - or to crush each other in the dusts of war. Widelands also offers an Artificial Intelligence to challenge you.
In the end, Widelands will be extensible, so that you can create your own tribe with their own set of buildings, create new worlds to play in, and even create new types of worlds (who says you can't build a settlement on the moon?).

I noticed that there are times where the workers would just stop halfway in delivery and that causes my game to get ruined, any reason why this happens?
Hello everyone! Hope you are all well! I have picked up the game from here and will try my best to promote it a little bit and hope that the developers continue to improve it as its got a lot of potential despite my silliness in not going through the tutorial first. I had a lot of fun with the game showcasing it and hope will try the game here if you have not so already and look forward to more from the developers keep up the good work!
Thank you for supporting the game and my videos!

Good one!
Very nice but can you add an alternative button for laptops without a page down/up button?
We now have a GUI menu for it, so you can access it with your mouse/touchpad.
You'll have to play a current development version or wait for the next release in order to get the new game speed menu ;)
this is really cool even tho i just watching the trailer. i will play it if i have time :)

Widelands is currently (and will always be) under development - you can get a feel for what is worked on by looking at the changelog. Everybody is invited to help out too - we need 2D and 3D artists, sound effect creators, composers, map makers, translators, test players, web programmers and C++ coders. All skill levels are welcome - just start working on something or ask in the forums for pointers.
Widelands 1.0 First Snow Feature Freeze
…is now in place.
The last half year since the release of Widelands Build 21 has been a golden time for development, with numerous new features added and swarms of bugs fixed. The Widelands Development Team is proud to announce that the era of the WIdelands beta build releases has come to an end, and the first-ever stable release Widelands 1.0 will be released this summer!
Widelands Geologist
The First Snow Feature Freeze for the release of Widelands 1.0 has taken place on Monday, the First of March 2021.
What does this mean?
From now on, no further features and bugfixes will be accepted except those that have been decided to be critical for the next release. No changes to translatable strings are desired.
When all remaining critical bugs are fixed, we will wait another two weeks and then call the Winter Time Feature Freeze.
Widelands Maps
And what does that mean for you?
You have only a few more weeks to update the translations for Widelands 1.0. Head over to Transifex (instructions can be found in our wiki) and add the missing translations for your language!
And play the current development version as much as you can and report bugs. Widelands 1.0 should be even more of a rock solid release than all the other rock solid releases before it. Let's make it so.
